Cool Pictures

We love what we do at the clinic. Here’s some pictures of who we are and what we do.

Here’s a cool article from the NC Dental Society Newsletter about our clinic:

CREATING NEW STORIES AND SMILES FOR WAUGHTOWN COMMUNITY

New Stories Group Health and Wellness Center supports the Waughtown community in Winston-Salem by providing accessible, no-cost, quality medical and dental services for adults from underserved households.  New Stories’ dental clinic is a recent grant recipient of the N.C. Dental Society Foundation Endowment.

The New Stories dental clinic, with two chairs, opened in June 2020, and now serves patients once a month on Saturdays. Patients are referred from the New Stories Health Center. Dr. Jannette Whisenhunt, the clinic’s dental manager, has just signed up the 100th patient.  Dental clinic services include examinations with treatment plan, X-rays, fillings, simple extractions, and cleanings.

“We try to take care of as many of our patients’ dental needs as possible in one sitting – some require three to four visits,” says Whisenhunt.

New Stories Group Health and Wellness Center is housed at New Story Church on Waughtown Street. The health clinic opened in Oct. 2019 and the dental clinic followed. All medical and dental clinic personnel are volunteers, with doctors, nurses, dentists and assistants primarily from the Forsyth County area to perform services.

New Stories Group dental clinic is largely dependent on donated equipment. In fact, the clinic is using donated suction units and lighting from the NC MOM program. David McNeil with Henry Schein set up the equipment and reworked water lines. Dr. A. Keith Phillips donated equipment from a former clinic which supplied the 2- chair clinic with almost all the equipment needed. Dr. Carolyn Correll from Charlotte donated three ADEC cabinets.  New Stories received another grant funding to buy a sensor and Nomad.

“We are so grateful for the N.C. Dental Society Foundation’s grant funding, which has been used to purchase new handpieces,” says Dr. Whisenhunt.

Whisenhunt, who has been in dentistry for over 45 year, generously devotes her time as a volunteer to the clinic. In her prior role as the Dept. Chair of Dental Education at Forsyth Technical Community College, she established its dental programs in 2002 and ran them until her retirement in 2019. She has brought her immense knowledge and leadership to the New Stories dental program.

New Stories Group health clinic services include physical exams, point of care testing, simple procedures/interventions such as stitches, incision and drainage procedures, physical therapy, and an orthopedic closet, which includes wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, and other items. New Story Church, where the clinic is housed, also has feeding programs, a clothing closet, and a shelter for people who are homeless.

“New Stories Group is grateful to be able to provide these services to help improve the overall health and wellness of this community……..”  If a medical or dental professional is interested in volunteering their services or donate to continue our services, please contact Dr. Whisenhunt at dental@newstoriesgroup.org
